Solid Zirconia Crowns

For many decades it has been used porcelain fused to metal crowns (PFM crowns) as a durable and reliable option for restorative dentistry. After all these years PFM crowns have proved to be strong and resistant restorations, but they possess some undesirable problems.

Aesthetics is one of the most mentioned by our patients. PFM crowns present high opacity and the crown is not able to reproduce translucency and fluorescence of the natural tooth. Another great complaint has been the black or gray line on the gingival level. The Solid Zirconia crowns have gone through much development and aesthetics has been one of them. BruxZir Zirconia crowns for instance have exceptional translucency and color shade similar to natural dentition.

PFM crowns need much more aggressive tooth preparation. The solid zirconia crowns show excellent performance being very thin.  That means that the tooth preparation is much less invasive maintaining the integrity of the tooth and its health. In my opinion this is the strongest point for solid Zirconia crown.

At my clinic, together with Smith Sterling Dental Lab, we use BruxZir Zirconia developed by Glidewell Laboratories.
